Percale vs Sateen vs Jacquard: A Buyer's Guide to Bed Linen Weaves

When procurement teams talk about bed linen, three weave names come up constantly: percale, sateen and jacquard. They describe how the threads cross, not what the fabric is made of, and that single distinction changes hand-feel, durability, sheen and price. Here's the practical breakdown.

Percale — the matte classic

Percale is a plain weave: one warp thread crosses over one weft thread, alternating. The result is a fabric that feels crisp, breathable, and slightly cool to the touch — the texture you associate with luxury hotel beds in warm climates.

Key characteristics

• Matte finish, no sheen
• Crisp hand-feel — gets softer with washing
• Excellent breathability — recommended for hot sleepers
• Hides creases moderately well
• Sweet spot: 200TC–400TC for hotel, 300TC–500TC for retail

Sateen — the lustrous drape

Sateen uses a 4-over-1 or 3-over-1 weave. Most of the yarn sits on the surface, creating a smooth, silky face with subtle sheen.

• Lustrous, silky surface
• Heavier drape than percale
• Photographs well (popular on Amazon and Instagram)
• Slightly warmer than percale — less breathability
• Sweet spot: 300TC–600TC

Jacquard — pattern woven in

Jacquard isn't a single weave — it's a loom technique where the pattern (stripe, damask, square check, geometric) is woven into the fabric rather than printed on top. The pattern is reversible and won't wash out.

• Slightly heavier and more textured
• More expensive per metre than plain percale or sateen

A quick decision table

Why thread count alone doesn't decide quality

A 600TC sateen woven from short-staple, multi-pick yarn will pill faster than a 300TC percale woven from long-staple combed cotton. Always ask about the yarn: long-staple vs regular, combed vs carded, single-pick vs multi-pick. Two sheets at the same thread count can cost very different amounts and last very different lengths of time.
