US Bed Sheet Sizes Explained: Twin XL to California King (2026 Importer's Guide) — cover image

Exact US mattress and sheet dimensions in inches and cm — Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King and Split King — plus pocket depths and tolerances to put on your spec sheet.

US bed sizes are the single most common reason a first import order gets rejected by an American buyer. A "queen" in India, the UK and the United States are three different products, and a fitted sheet cut to the wrong pocket depth is unsellable no matter how good the cotton is. This guide gives you the exact numbers to put on a spec sheet.

US mattress sizes at a glance

SizeMattress (in)Mattress (cm)Common in

Twin XL38 × 8096.5 × 203College dorms, split king halves
Full / Double54 × 75137 × 190.5Guest rooms, small apartments
Queen60 × 80152 × 203Most common US size
King76 × 80193 × 203Master bedrooms, hotels
California King72 × 84183 × 213West Coast, tall sleepers
Split King2 × (38 × 80)2 × (96.5 × 203)Adjustable beds

Queen is roughly 45–50% of US sheet-set volume. King and Twin XL follow. If you are launching a private label with limited SKUs, start Queen and King, then add Twin XL.

Flat sheet dimensions

Flat sheets in the US run generously. Undersized flats are the number-one complaint in Amazon reviews for imported sheet sets.

Twin XL66 × 102168 × 259

Fitted sheet pocket depth — the deal-breaker

American mattresses are deep. Pillow-tops and hybrid foam mattresses commonly run 14–18 inches, and buyers filter Amazon listings by pocket depth.

  • Standard pocket: 12 inches (30 cm) — fits older or basic mattresses only
  • Deep pocket: 15 inches (38 cm) — the safe default for US retail
  • Extra deep pocket: 18 inches (46 cm) — pillow-top and hybrid mattresses

Specify all-around elastic on every fitted sheet, not just corner elastic, and state the elastic width (a 3/4-inch knitted elastic holds far better than a 1/2-inch woven one).

Pillowcase sizes

NameSize (in)Size (cm)
Standard20 × 2651 × 66
Queen20 × 3051 × 76
King20 × 4051 × 102
Euro sham26 × 2666 × 66

Queen sheet sets in the US normally ship with Standard pillowcases; King sets ship with King cases. Include a 4-inch tuck flap on hotel-style cases.

Duvet cover and comforter sizes

SizeDuvet cover (in)Duvet cover (cm)
Twin / Twin XL68 × 90173 × 229
Full / Queen90 × 90229 × 229
King / Cal King104 × 90264 × 229

Note that the US market commonly merges Full/Queen and King/Cal King in duvet covers — this reduces your SKU count meaningfully.

Shrinkage and measurement tolerance

Put these on the PO or you will argue about them later:

  1. Residual shrinkage after three home washes: ≤ 4% (sanforised finish)
  2. Cut-and-sew measurement tolerance: ± 1 inch (2.5 cm) on flats, ± 0.5 inch on fitted pockets
  3. Measure after finishing and washing, not off the loom
  4. AQL 2.5 major / 4.0 minor for retail, AQL 1.5 for premium DTC

Labelling requirements for the US market

Selling into the United States means FTC compliance, not just good stitching:

  • Fibre content by percentage (FTC Textile Fiber Products Identification Act)
  • Country of origin — "Made in India"
  • RN number of the US importer or brand owner
  • Care instructions per the FTC Care Labeling Rule, in English
  • Flammability — bedding must meet 16 CFR 1632/1633 where applicable to mattress products; sheets themselves are generally exempt, but confirm for filled products
