Wholesale Bed Sheets from India: A Sourcing Guide for International Buyers β€” cover image

Why India dominates global cotton bed linen production, what to look for in a manufacturer, and how to structure a first import order.

India produces roughly 30% of the world's cotton bed linen and ships finished sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases to nearly every major retail, hospitality and e-commerce market. For buyers in the US, UK, EU, UAE and Australia, an Indian supplier is often the right blend of quality, price and capacity. Here's how to source effectively.

Why India dominates cotton bed linen

  • Vertically integrated mills β€” many factories handle spinning, weaving, dyeing, printing, finishing and cut-and-sew under one roof, removing layers of middlemen.
  • Long-staple cotton supply β€” Gujarat and Maharashtra grow Shankar-6 and DCH-32 long-staple cotton ideal for premium sheeting.
  • Mature export ecosystem β€” Customs, freight forwarders and inspection bodies are well-developed; FOB Nhava Sheva / Mundra is straightforward.
  • Cost-competitive vs China and Pakistan for cotton β€” though Pakistan still leads on terry and towel.

Clusters to know

Major production clusters

  • Ahmedabad, Gujarat β€” strong in woven sheeting, hospitality and retail private label. Royal Mills is here.
  • Karur, Tamil Nadu β€” home textiles, woven and printed.
  • Panipat, Haryana β€” recycled cotton, throws, blankets.
  • Erode, Tamil Nadu β€” knit and woven, strong dye houses.

Match your category to the right cluster.

What to verify before placing an order

Pre-order verification checklist

  1. Factory ownership β€” confirm they own the looms / cut-and-sew, not just a trading desk. Ask for a video walkthrough.
  2. Certifications β€” ISO 9001:2015, GOTS (if organic), Sedex / BSCI (if retail compliance matters to your customer).
  3. Capacity β€” daily production output and current order book.
  4. Sample turnaround β€” under 14 days for an on-spec sample is a good sign.
  5. In-house QC β€” AQL inspection at cutting, mid-production and pre-shipment.
  6. References β€” ask for two or three current export clients in your region.

MOQs and lead times

Typical order timeline

  • MOQ: typically 500–1,000 pcs per SKU per colour. Custom Pantone colours often push MOQ higher. At Royal Mills, standard MOQ is 100 pieces per SKU for bed sheets, duvet covers and custom private label sets β€” Pantone-matched programs start at 300 pieces per SKU.
  • Sample lead time: 10–14 days for an on-spec sample.
  • Production lead time: 45–60 days FOB after PO and 30% deposit.
  • Shipping: 21–30 days FCL to US East Coast, 25–35 days to UK / EU, 15–20 days to UAE.

Build buffer into your launch plan β€” Indian holidays (Diwali, Holi) and monsoon-season port slowdowns are real.

Payment terms that protect both sides

Recommended payment structure

  • 30% advance against PO
  • 70% balance against scanned copy of BL or against L/C at sight

Avoid 100% advance for first orders. Avoid 100% credit for first orders. Split deposits build trust on both sides.

Quality control checkpoints

Three QC passes

A serious manufacturer will run three QC passes for you:

  1. Fabric inspection β€” width, GSM, count, shade matching, fabric defects (slubs, holes, contamination).
  2. In-line inspection β€” stitching, measurement, seam strength during cut-and-sew.
  3. Final random inspection (FRI) β€” AQL 2.5 critical, 4.0 major, on a random sample drawn from finished, packed cartons.

For first orders, consider hiring an independent inspection agency (SGS, Bureau Veritas, QIMA) for the FRI. It costs $250–400 and saves you from disasters.

Packaging and labelling

Packaging decisions

Decide upfront:

  • Poly bag dimensions and material
  • Retail box (if any) β€” printed or kraft
  • Hangtag and care label (sew-in or print-on-label)
  • UPC / EAN / FNSKU barcode placement
  • Master carton size, weight and labelling per your buyer's spec

A good factory will apply all of this in-house and palletise to your buyer's spec.
